Me ugly crying at the theatre when Mitsuha looks at what’s written on her hand while the people next to me loudly pull out containers of food and yell “damn she got slimed”
Good good good
Read the book on my 11hr flight to Japan and then watched the movie on the biggest IMAX screen in Japan.
Amaze amaze amaze
Very faithful to the book, maybe a couple pacing issues which caused some unearned payoffs. But overall, there were some incredible emotional beats.
But the swelling space orchestral score, please just inject that into my veins already. The coloring of the IR spectrum shots was a really nice touch and also quite faithful to how IR photography looks.
This was a great one. That’s all :)
Fist my bump
STILL my favorite horror movie of all time
A thrilling exploration of regret, saving others with community, and the boldness required to forge a path and encourage others to follow that path with you
Also, I friggin LOVE the intro. HYPE
Melancholy and love come together to make something quite stunning in this film, quite like rain and sunshine make stunning rainbows 🌈
And then… you turn off the TV and get back to it…
When I first saw the poster for the NGE TV series, I thought it looked weird. I was even more avoidant of it when my anime-loving coworker told me it was a mecha-anime where robots fight each other in epic battles. If my Transformers experience was any indication, I probably wasn’t going to like this.
While waiting for the new series “The Summer Hikaru Died” to fully air (I’m saving it since I like to binge watch instead of wait a week per episode), I decided to give it a try since I didn’t have any other ideas of what to watch. I fell in LOVE. It was so beautifully animated and immediately immersed you into an enigmatic future. As each episode progressed, I slowly realized there was so much more going on beneath the surface (pun intended?)
I never would have expected all this weight. Everything from the real meaning of AT fields, looping timelines as a representation of the franchise and our inability to move on, anime as a form of escapism, the pain of avoidance, the regret of indecisiveness, the fear and pain of connection, the hedgehog’s dilemma, coping with loneliness, and the desire to be loved… holy shit
Thank you Anno. You made a franchise that speaks to me in so many ways. I don’t think I could even begin to verbalize all the emotions this final installment left me with.
This is by far the most meaningful piece of media I’ve ever consumed. I’m going to need some time with this one
“time waits for no one”
regrets from how you’ve handled yourself, how you’ve affected others, and the kind of mistakes you’ve never quite forgiven yourself for all come together in this movie.
everything from the cicadas to the striking shadows and clouds fills the screen with an eye-watering amount of breath-taking detail, but that won’t be the only thing bringing on the water works.
avoidance is the greatest source of regret. take that chance, stupid.
How can every frame be so beautiful? I want to savor it all but I feel like I’ll forget, just like waking from a dream. It really is like the sieve and the sand…
I can’t get over the ending. I’ve struggled with the concept of destiny and soulmates and I still don’t think I understand, or if I ever will. Each time their paths briefly intersected, I had shed a tear for another wasted chance. The ending is almost cruel if it weren’t for the last line. We make decisions in our lives that sometimes feel like self-sabotage in retrospect and this ending replicates that deep gut-feeling that you know you missed something over and over.
I can’t help but think about the relationships in my life that I MISSED because it wasn’t a good time, we were in different places in life, the feelings weren’t mutual at that point, I wasn’t mature enough, the person moved away, etc. It’s a goddamn tragedy that puts knots in my stomach. A knot I also wish I can unravel and travel back in time to try again.
Two parallel lines will never intersect, forever separated, never to join. Two non-parallel lines are bound to intersect, only briefly, never to meet again.
I don’t know, maybe this is a tragedy—it sure feels like it to me.
