When you break the social contract, civilization breaks down. The wars we wage perpetuate themselves until our humanity is no longer recognizable.

That cyclops was absolutely terrifying. The sound it made too: harrowing. Fucking fantastic.

The score wasn’t as iconic as most Nolan movies but still hit all the right beats.

And oh my god don’t get me started on that dog finally dying. I’m gonna cry.

3 and a half hours and I’m ready to watch this again

It had its moments but man… I just expect so much more from Spielberg

Watched this a couple nights ago with William with stomachs full of whiskey. This franchise will always have a special place in my heart. My sister and I would watch these all the time as kids.

Couldn’t stop laughing but wow holy shit I don’t even think there was an attempt at a plot lol

Still had a blast

“There’s gotta be more to it…”

That was real dialogue from the movie. Honestly though, Masters of the Universe is camp and it knows it, it’s so beautiful. Also the rock-heavy soundtrack and score were really refreshing in an era where most superhero movies focus on modern needle drops.

This movie has left a stain on my psyche in the way that all good horror movies do. It’s unsettling. It’s uncanny, it’s unrelenting, unforgiving… liminal.

Kane really built something unique here. Starting with Attack on Titan videos on YouTube, to his infamous Backrooms series, and now this. 

Each floor of the backrooms peels away as each layer reveals something new about our protagonists. The backrooms remembers places and people: every time something is remembered, it corrupts the memory ever so slightly. It clings to familiarity, its repetitive, and sometimes fees nonsensical. This place is the human psyche. 

We see someone unwilling to let go of his divorce. Unable to accept his mistakes and meets himself with nights of endless rumination. And a therapist with her own demons, scarred by her upbringing, driving her to help others as an attempt to hopefully heal herself.

I think this movie might have some of my favorite character building scenes. That first therapy session tells us so much about these two in the span of just a couple minutes with such intensity and vividness. It instantly brought depth to our characters that really setup the movie for success (something that many directors/writers double or triple the age of Kane seemingly forget to do)

Last of all, seeing blood in the backrooms, like pools of it was a unique treat. Catching a glimpse of the monster retreating into a horizontal door like it’s a fucking dog door while dragging that guy’s limp body is seared into my mind.

Holy fucking shit dude

Man, I love this move franchise 

Saw it in the Cosm dome? I think that’s what it’s called? It was definitely a fresh and novel way to re-experience the movie in 360

Read the book on my 11hr flight to Japan and then watched the movie on the biggest IMAX screen in Japan. 

Amaze amaze amaze

Very faithful to the book, maybe a couple pacing issues which caused some unearned payoffs. But overall, there were some incredible emotional beats.

But the swelling space orchestral score, please just inject that into my veins already. The coloring of the IR spectrum shots was a really nice touch and also quite faithful to how IR photography looks.

I usually love loud and dramatic soundscapes in movies. But this one was quite quiet. And I liked it so very much :)

I’m slowly making my way through the Ghibli collection and each movie is like a box of chocolates. I nearly bawled at the grandmothers making Kiki that cake and don’t get me started about how this movie is a sober but encouraging take on “launching”
